Regalia vs Memphis: Different Kinds of Heavy

On paper Regalia and Memphis sound similar — both lean dark, both lean trap-adjacent, both prize atmosphere over melody. In practice they live in different rooms.

Memphis is dirty. The samples are pulled from cassette transfers and stay that way. Hi-hats sit slightly behind the beat. Vocal chops crackle. There's grime built into the sound design before any creative choice gets made.

Regalia is heavier but cleaner. It came out of the same lineage but went through Detroit and SoundCloud and ended up shinier. Bass is sub-heavy and modulated, not blown out. The grit, when it appears, is intentional, not a leftover from medium degradation.

When I'm producing Memphis I'm trying to sound like a found object. When I'm producing Regalia I'm trying to sound like a weapon.
